چکیده

The Marine Ecoregions of the World system separates oceans into 232 ecoregions based on coastal and shelfwater species distributions. We tested separation those delineated subecoregions within Western Australian waters using intertidal macroalgal epiphytic polychaete Environmental predictors assemblages were also determined. collected macroalgae polychaetes 38 rocky shores four marine from 18°S to 34°S: (1) Exmouth Broome, (2) Ningaloo, (3) Houtman, (4) Leeuwin. evaluated differences in composition among pairwise permutational multivariate analysis variance each ecoregion hierarchical cluster analysis. Multivariate relationships between environmental variables determined distance-based linear models. significantly differed ecoregions, with dissimilarity 78-96% for 62-75% polychaetes. identified three Broome Ningaloo two Houtman Leeuwin distribution. found no subecoregion could explain 51% total variation 41% top explaining a high proportion assemblage distribution sea surface temperature (15% 12% polychaetes) tidal amplitude (10% 6% polychaetes). These can be used as an alternative spatial framework classifying habitats designing protected area networks waters.

Effects of macroalgal mats on intertidal sandflats: an experimental study.

The growth of green macroalgal mats is becoming increasingly common in many marine intertidal habitats. While the ecological effects of such growth has previously been experimentally investigated on mudflats, such experiments have rarely been performed on intertidal sandflats. This study investigated the ecological effects of macroalgal cover on a moderately exposed intertidal sandflat, Drum Sa...

Evaluation of Management Strategies in Ningaloo Marine Park, Western Australia

The spatial, multi-species nature of coral reef fisheries makes them notoriously difficult to manage. We have developed a simulation modeling approach to examine the effect of management options on the recreationally important tourist destination of Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia where a recreational fishery targets Spangled Emperor (Lethrinus nebulosus). The approach brings a broad range o...

Association of rhizobia with a marine polychaete.

We report the presence of Mesorhizobium, a genus best known for its nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with terrestrial legumes, associated with the marine polychaete Meganerilla bactericola (Annelida: Nerillidae). Abundant epibionts were previously described as coating the exterior of M. bactericola, which is found within the anoxic sulfide-oxidizing microbial mats of the Santa Barbara Basin, Californi...

Hydrodynamic Modelling of Coral Reefs:Ningaloo Reef-Western Australia

As with all coral reef systems, the ecology of Ningaloo Reef is closely linked to water circulation which transport and disperse key material such as nutrients and larvae. Circulation on coral reefs may be driven by a number of forcing mechanisms including waves, tides, wind, and buoyancy effects. Surface waves interacting with reefs have long been known to dominate the currents on many coral r...
